[Genuine 18th century French parchment, English willow charcoal, genuine peat earth, genuine bone white, Aus. yellow ochre, Indian ink on traditional gesso on 640gsm archival paper]
Before paper, the pages of books were made with parchment, the treated skins of sheep. The painted images were done with a tempera made from the off-cuts of parchment. The most valued books were the ones where the pages and the tempera were from the same animal.
