In the Mediterranean area, the 90-day fermented skins of pomegranates containing tannic acid were made into a dark brown ink and used by scribes and artists alike. A rusty metal soaked in vinegar was added to the ink to aid in its ability to ‘bite’ into the paper and be lightfast.
