Alabaster is a natural transparent crystalline mineral, it makes a soft white gesso that is easier to polish for gilding and painting grounds. And just like with marble dust, Renaissance painters might add the fine alabasta to create not just more body but also to enhance the crystalline effects in the paint for the light to bounce around the pigments.
