[Clove bud oil, clove leaf oil, passionfruit ink, elderberry ink, madder root ink, pine ink on traditional gesso on 640gsm archival paper]
Clove oil was used to slow drying but also as a preservative in tempera painting recipes, including those made from tree gums, eggs or animal glues. Medically it was used to fight infections so perhaps artists took advantage of the anti-bacterial/microbial properties.
