[Tourmaline crystal, vine charcoal, lamp residue, peach pip charcoal, manganese, ebony wood, pine ink on traditional gesso on 640gsm archival paper]

Traditionally artists could make their black pigments with the wood of the Ebony tree or by grinding black minerals and crystals. More commonly was the use of charcoal made with resinous wood, shells and animal bones. Each black pigment would be tempered uniquely to suit.
